Man Holding a Gun Properly at the Shooting Range

How Do You Properly Hold a Handgun?

Any responsible gun owner knows that properly handling a firearm is an important part of owning one. Any gun enthusiast who does not currently own a firearm but plans to buy one should make sure they know how to hold and operate them properly before buying one for their own safety as well as the safety of others. Here at Every Day Gun Guy we are a Texas gun store comprised of firearm advocates who promote the safe and proper handling of guns. Today we’d like to discuss the proper way to hold a handgun.

Make Sure the Gun isn’t Loaded

When first reaching for your gun, assume that it is loaded. This mindset will get you in the habit of always checking and clearing the gun. Always point it away from yourself and people – down range if you’re at a gun range – and remove all rounds before exiting the range. Remove the magazine, rack the slide, and ensure there isn’t a bullet in the chamber. Anytime you are handling firearms, safety and common sense are crucial. Take a look at our selection of handguns on our online gun store so you can get a better idea of the size and style of handgun you need.

Avoid these 3 Common Bad Grip Mistakes

The way you grip your handgun is very important, and we’ll go over the proper way to hold the gun in a moment. Before we do that, we want to go over some common grips that are not recommended when holding your gun. Here are three of the top grips not to use.

Mistake #1 - Crossing Your Thumbs

Holding both hands together with the thumbs crossing each other behind the slide. The reason this grip is not recommended is because it is dangerous and can end up causing you harm. Your thumb could potentially get caught in the slide as it blows back when you fire, cutting you.

Mistake #2 - Holding the Gun like a Teacup

Holding your dominant hand with your non-dominant hand underneath it like you would hold a teacup is a bad way to grip your handgun. The reason for shooting with two hands as opposed to one is for more control over the gun, but with only one hand actually holding the gun there is less support for the recoil and therefore you don’t have as much control.

Mistake #3 - Index Finger in Front of Trigger

Holding both hands together with the index finger of the non-dominant hand out in front of the trigger guard. As opposed to having all of your fingers together in a tight grip, this loosens your hands up slightly allowing for more recoil and gun movement.

Use a Two-handed Grip Whenever Possible

Hopefully you are never in a situation where a handgun is needed and you aren’t able to use a two-handed grip, as you should use two hands instead of one whenever possible. This is because similar to driving a vehicle, using two hands is going to be more stable and accurate, and therefore safer. You start with your dominant hand, which will be the hand you shoot with. Keep the index finger of your dominant hand free since this will be your trigger finger, and wrap your non-dominant hand around the other fingers of your dominant hand. Hold both of your thumbs together to the side of the slide not behind it.

When you are holding the gun, never keep the index finger on the trigger unless you are aiming and firing. You do not need to grip the gun with all of your strength, just firmly. As you are firing, it helps with the stability of your grip and the accuracy of your shot if you push forward with your dominant hand and pull backward with your non-dominant.If you already own a firearm, check out our in stock ammo on our online gun store.
